July is UV Safety Awareness Month, a time to focus on protecting yourself from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It's important to minimize sun exposure, especially during peak UV hours, and to use protective measures like sunscreen, protective clothing, and sunglasses.
Here's why it's important:
-
UV radiation is harmful: Excessive UV exposure can lead to sunburn, skin damage, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer.
- Peak UV hours: The sun's UV rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Reflection: Water, snow, and sand can reflect UV rays, increasing your risk of sunburn.
How to stay safe:
- Seek shade: When possible, stay in the shade, especially during peak UV hours.
- Wear protective clothing: Cover up with long sleeves, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.
- Use sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher liberally and reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.
- Choose sunglasses that block UV rays: Look for sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
- Avoid tanning and sunburn: Intentional tanning and sunburns increase your risk of skin cancer and premature aging, according to the National Weather Service.
